According to the writings of historians of the Revolution of 1821, on March 20, 1821, in “Aloni tou Kallinderi” in Agioneri, Gortynia, Georgios and Dimitrios Plapoutas declared the liberation struggle against the Ottoman occupation.
Today, there is a monument in the area, where commemorative events of this historical event take place every year.
Agioneri, formerly known as Betsi, is a small semi-mountainous village of the Municipality of Gortynia, very close to the border with the Regional Unit of Ilia, which was to play a key role in the beginning of the Revolution of 1821.
Agioneri, Arcadia, is a semi-mountainous village in the southern region of Heraea, near the river Ladon and at an altitude of 310 meters.
Until 1927, it was called Betsi, and according to Amvrosios Frantzis, who is considered the first historian of the Revolution of 1821, on March 20, Dimitrios and Georgios Plapoutas, who came from the nearby village of Paloumpa, declared the Revolution for the liberation of Greece in a camp site that is still called “Aloni tou Kallinderi” in Betsi.
Since 1995, a monument has been erected at the site and every year commemorations are held for the militancy of the fighters and the determination of the uprising for liberation.
As Frantzis mentions, the two soldiers, together with a few hundred warriors from Gortynia, declared the Revolution in Heraea and began the fight for the liberation of Greece. The powerful families of Gortynia, that is, the Kolokotronis, the Plapoutas and the Deligiannis family, spearheaded the liberation struggle.
Also, according to the historian and author Ioannis Koutsoukos, there were few Turks in the province of Gortynia. Τhey were mostly administrative employees of the Sultan who lived with their families in the capital villages of Gortynia and entered into mutual aid agreements with the rebels to keep themselves and their families alive.
Today, the inhabitants of this historic village are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. The village, apart from the monument at “Aloni tou Kallinderi”, has a cultural center housed in the old school, which has also been recently renovated. It also has a newly established sports center.
